Alpha lipoic acid (ALA) is a vitamin-like compound with antioxidant properties. It promotes healthy cell function and may provide protective benefits against oxidative processes believed to contribute to degenerative diseases and aging.
ALA has been called the universal antioxidant. Besides neutralizing unstable free radical molecules in the body, ALA may boost glutathione (one of the body's most powerful antioxidants) levels in cells. One of the most beneficial effects of ALA is its ability to regenerate other essential antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, coenzyme Q10 and glutathione.
ALA is also a co-factor for some of the key enzymes involved in generating energy from food and oxygen in mitochondria. It may enhance energy levels while also assisting the body with supporting healthy blood sugar levels.
Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin that functions as a coenzyme for carbon dioxide transfer and hence, is essential for fat and carbohydrate metabolism. Biotin may also benefit hair and nail health.
