How Does NSI® R-Lipoic Acid work?
R-lipoic acid (RLA) is the naturally-occurring form of lipoic acid, a nutrient present in every cell of the body, essential to chemical reactions which allow the body to produce energy. The "R" form is considered the biologically active form, identical to that produced by the body.

In addition to playing a crucial role in normal metabolism and energy production, lipoic acid also functions as a potent antioxidant that helps guard healthy cells from the damaging effects of free radicals.

Because it's both fat and water soluble, lipoic acid can neutralize free radicals in both the fatty and watery regions of cells (unlike vitamin C, which is only water soluble, and vitamin E, which is fat soluble). RLA is also able to cross the blood-brain barrier, which enables it to benefit both brain cells (neurons) and cells throughout the body.

Lipoic acid is also known to increase levels of glutathione in the body. Glutathione is an antioxidant that plays an important role in supporting the brain as well as visual health.

Lipoic acid may also promote healthy blood glucose by reducing glucose tolerance and decreasing insulin resistance. It may also restore glucose availability in tissues such as the skeletal muscle.

Supplementing with RLA provides the body with enough of this nutrient to keep up with metabolic demands. Also, RLA functions as an antioxidant only when it's present in excess because your body will use it for energy production rather than antioxidant protection.
